Tidying up my dotfiles, again
My shell config had grown to a few hundred lines, half of it for tools I no longer use. This weekend I deleted everything and added things back only when I missed them.
What survived:
- A handful of aliases for git (
gs,gd,gl). - History settings: shared between sessions, no duplicates, a large limit.
- A prompt that shows the current directory and git branch, nothing else.
Startup time went from about 400 ms to under 50 ms. The lesson I keep re-learning: configuration is a liability, not an asset. Keep only what earns its place.
